SANDAY
POP 478
Aptly named, blissfully quiet flat Sanday is ringed by Orkney's best beaches - with
dazzling-white sand of the sort you'd expect in the Caribbean.
At the tip of the headland east of the main village of Kettletoft is Quoyness chambered
tomb (admission free; 24hr) , similar to Maes Howe and dating from the 3rd millenni-
um BC. It has triple walls, a main chamber and six smaller cells.
Beyond the loch at the northeastern tip of the island is Tofts Ness (admission free;
24 hr) , a largely unexcavated funerary complex with some 500 prehistoric burial mounds
and the remains of an Iron Age roundhouse.
