£18-20; ) On the main street, this sociable place has cramped but cosy dorms (the
upstairs ones are a pound more but have more space) as well as small private rooms. Life
centres on its inviting common area, where you can browse the internet for free or swap
pasta recipes in the open kitchen. There are overflow rooms in a house up the street, with
self-catering options available. Cycle shed.
Stromness Hotel££
( 01856-850298; www.stromnesshotel.com ; 15 Victoria St; s/d £59/106; ) Proudly
surveying the main street and harbour, this lofty Victorian hotel is a reminder of the way
things used to be, with its posh revolving door and imposing facade. The pink-hued rooms
are spacious and have a certain charm, though a few quirks (uneven floors, old-fashioned
fittings, generator noise in some rooms) let the overall package down a bit. The claustro-
phobic lift means your suitcase'll have to find its own way up.
HOTEL

is as neat as a pin.
