St Margaret's Hope Backpackers£

Bay ferry, this hostel is a lovely stone cottage offering small, simple rooms with up to four
berths - great for families. There's a lounge, kitchen, laundry and good, hot showers. It's
an excellent set-up and you can use the adjacent cafe's wi-fi. Book in at the Trading Post
shop next door.

on unpretentious wooden tables, some of Scotland's best seafood has been served up for
well over 20 years. Upstairs, three most comfortable rooms (singles/doubles £75/110)
face the spectacular sunset over the water. Wooden ceilings and plenty of space give them
an airy feel. It was up for sale at the time of research, so fingers crossed.
Skerries Bistro£

and friendly, this little bistro occupies a lovely sun-drenched conservatory near the is-
land's southern tip. Meals range from soups and sandwiches to delicious seafood platters
at knockdown prices, and daily fish and shellfish specials. It's all delicious. Dinner should
be booked ahead. It also has self-catering cottages available at this beautiful spot.

West & North Mainland
This part of the island is sprinkled with outstanding prehistoric monuments: the journey
up to Orkney is worth it for these alone. It would take the best part of a day to see all of
them - if pushed for time, visit Skara Brae then Maes Howe, but book your visit to the lat-
ter in advance.
