The capital of Orkney is a bustling market town, set back from a wide bay. Kirkwall's
long, winding, paved main street and twisting wynds (lanes) are very atmospheric, and the
town has a magnificent cathedral. Founded in the early 11th century, when Earl Rognvald
Brusson established his kingdom here, the original part of Kirkwall is one of the best ex-
amples of an ancient Norse town.
