brings you knocking. The assiduously tended rooms are a delight, with excellent facilities
and thoughtful touches like bathrobes. Those without a water view are consoled with
more space and a balcony with rock-garden perspectives. Just down the way, the cottage
offers simpler comfort. The cosy bar, or wonderful beer garden on a sunny day, are mem-
orable places for a pint, and food ranges from sound-value bar meals to seafood platters
and local langoustines brought in on the afternoon boat.
Plockton Station Bunkhouse£

station (the new one is opposite), Plockton Station Bunkhouse has cosy four-bed dorms, a
garden and kitchen-lounge with plenty of light and good perspectives over the frenetic
comings and goings (OK, that last bit's a lie) of the platforms below. It can get a bit
cramped when there are lots of folk in. The owners also do good-value B&B (single/
double £30/48) next door in the inaccurately named 'Nessun Dorma'.
HOSTEL
Shieling££

sea, characterful Shieling is surrounded by an expertly trimmed garden and has two car-
peted rooms with views and big beds. Next door is a historic thatched blackhouse (a low-
walled stone cottage with a turf roof and earthen floor).

Duncraig Castle££

craig Castle offers luxurious, offbeat hospitality, as long as stuffed animals don't offend
you. It needs a bit of work still - the curiously ugly school building alongside is thank-
fully destined for removal - but ongoing improvements are in progress; at time of re-
search it was closed for substantial renovation, but will be open by the time you read this.
It's very close to Plockton but has its own train station.
