the road to Shieldaig, this offers some of the most memorable vistas around from its pleas-
ant garden and top-floor double. All the rooms are very spacious and comfortable, and it's
a welcoming place, with a guest lounge with fire and music, afternoon tea served on the
grass on a fine day and excellent breakfasts and dinners featuring homemade yoghurt,
cheese and bread, among other goodies.

The modern, boxy-looking Torridon hostel is in a magnificent
location, surrounded by spectacular mountains. It's a very popular walking base, so book
ahead in summer.

a lovely waterfront position, this offers old-style rooms that are comfortable but feel more
than a little overpriced. The £45 dinner menu features competently presented local pro-
duce and shines on the seafood front and in its Scottish cheeses. There's also cheaper bar
food in the sociable pub, which has waterside tables.

The delightfully remote seaside village of Applecross feels more like an island retreat due
to its isolation and the magnificent views of Raasay and the hills of Skye that set the pulse
racing, particularly at sunset. On a clear day it's an unforgettable place, though the tran-
quil atmosphere isn't quite the same when the campsite and pub fill to the brim in school
holidays.
