three generations of Johnstons photographed everything that happened around Wick, and
the 70,000 photographs are an amazing portrait of the town's life. Prints of the early pho-
tos are for sale.

The owners couldn't be more helpful - they've been in the business for many years and
know what they're doing. Right by the harbour, it's handy for everything worth seeing in
town. Spruce rooms have kitchenettes and can be taken at B&B or bed-only rates. There's
a handy family room, and self-catering flats available, plus good facilities for cyclists and
motorcyclists. Book ahead.

Mackays Hotel££
( 01955-602323; www.mackayshotel.co.uk ; Union St; s/d £89/119; ) The renovated
Mackays is Wick's best hotel. Rooms vary in layout and size, so ask to see a few; prices
drop if you're staying more than one night and walk-up prices are usually quite a bit lower
than the rack rates we list here. On-site No 1 Bistro (Union St; mains £12-18) is a fine op-
tion for lunch or dinner. The 2.06m-long Ebenezer Pl, the world's shortest street, runs past
one end of the hotel.
