In-Depth Information
In summer you may be lucky enough to hear the 'krek-krek' of the corncrake at the
RSPBNature Reserve
at Totronald in the southwest of the island; there's an
RSPB Visit-
or Centre
(
01879-230301; admission free; 24hr)
here. From Totronald a sandy
4WD track runs north past the dunes backing Hogh Bay to the road at Totamore, allowing
walkers and cyclists to make a circuit back to Arinagour rather than returning the way
they came.
There are two ruined castles about 6 miles southwest of Arinagour, both known as
Breachachadh Castle
, built by the Macleans in medieval times.
At the time of research, a new community centre,
An Cridhe
(
01879-230000;
www.ancridhe.co.uk
;
Arinagour)
, was about to open. This will host exhibitions of art and
photography, and provide a venue for music and entertainment.
Sleeping & Eating
Most accommodation on Coll is self-catering; only two places offer B&B, including

in Arinagour. You can

; Arinagour; s/d £65/120; )
The island's only
hotel is an atmospheric old place. Its quirkily shaped rooms have white-painted, wood-
panelled walls, and some have lovely views over the manicured hotel gardens and the har-
bour. The hotel also has a really good
restaurant
(mains £13 to £26) that serves a variety
of dishes ranging from crab chowder to local lamb chops, langoustines and lobster.
