Getting There & Away
Dunoon is served by two competing ferry services from Gourock - the CalMac
( www.calmac.co.uk ) ferry is better if you are travelling on foot and want to arrive in the
town centre.
There are three Scottish Citylink ( 0871-266 3333; www.citylink.co.uk ) buses a day
from Glasgow to Dunoon (£15, three hours, change at Inveraray).
TIGHNABRUAICH
POP 200
Sleepy little Tighnabruaich (tinna- broo -ach), a colony of seaside villas built by wealthy
Glasgow families at the turn of the 20th century, is one of the most attractive villages on
the Firth of Clyde. It was once a regular stop for Clyde steamers, and the old wooden pier
is still occasionally visited by the paddle steamer Waverley .
The link with the sea continues in the Tighnabruaich Sailing School
( www.tssargyll.co.uk ; Carry Farm; May-Sep) , 2 miles south of Tighnabruaich. A five-
day dinghy-sailing course costs £250, excluding accommodation.
The village is home to the Royal an Lochan Hotel ( 01700-811239;
www.theroyalanlochan.co.uk ; r £100-150; ) , a local institution that has reverted from
short-lived boutique hotel status to understated but luxurious elegance. Expect leather so-
fas, polished wood, fine bed linen and just a touch of tartan, with fantastic sea views from
most bedrooms. The restaurant (mains £15 to £20) has a well-deserved reputation for
good food prepared with fresh, locally sourced produce.
If all you want to do is fill up with good, hearty homemade grub, go for the mussels and
chips at the Burnside Bistro ( www.burnsidebistro.co.uk ; mains £7-15; 9am-9pm) in
the village centre, or a bar meal at the excellent Kames Hotel ( 01700-811489; kames-
hotel.com; s/d from £50/90; mains £7-15; lunch & dinner; ) , a mile to the south.
