with a comfy dorm, and cheaper beds in an alpine-style bothy (shared sleeping platform
for 10 people; bring your own sleeping bag). Extras include a drying room (for wet-
weather gear), laundry and even a sauna (£10 an hour). Nonguests are welcome to use the
internet (£3 per hour, 10.30am to 4.30pm), laundry and even the showers (£2). The
friendly owner is a font of knowledge about the local area.

A spacious Victorian villa set in beautiful gardens, the Clunie is a great place to relax after
a hard day's hiking, with its comfortable residents lounge, bedrooms with views of the
hills and red squirrels scampering through the neighbouring woods. There's a drying room
and secure storage for bicycles.

) This Victorian shooting lodge on the southern outskirts of Braemar has bags of char-
acter, not least in the wood-panelled Malt Room bar, which is as well stocked with moun-
ted deer heads as it is with single-malt whiskies. There's a good restaurant with views of
the hills, plus a 12-berth hikers' bunkhouse in the hotel grounds.

grand former shooting lodge just south of Braemar viilage centre on the A93 to Perth. It
has a comfy lounge with pool table, and a barbecue in the garden.
