This welcoming gem, in a quiet street south of the centre, is run by a friendly family and
their pets, including a portly marmalade cat and feisty black lab. There's just one double
room, which is lovely, light and comfortable. You'll feel right at home.

Old Fishergate House££

; North Castle St; s/d £80/110; )
This
historic 17th-century town house, furnished with period pieces, is in a great location - the
oldest part of town, close to the cathedral and castle. The two twin rooms are very spa-
cious and even have their own sitting room and cushioned ledges on their window sills.
On a scale of one to 10 for quaintness, we'd rate it about a 9½. Cracking breakfasts fea-
ture fresh fish and pancakes.
HOSTEL
St Andrews Tourist Hostel£

; St Marys Pl; dm £11-13; )
Laid-back
and central, this hostel, down the side of the Grill House restaurant, is a little hard to spot.
Occupying a stately old building, it has high corniced ceilings, especially in the huge
lounge, and a laissez-faire approach. The dorms could use new mattresses, but are clean
and bright. There's a supermarket close by. Reception closed between 2pm and 5pm.
