( 01786-450632; www.hermanns.co.uk ; 58 Broad St; 2-course lunch/3-course dinner
£13/22, mains £16-20) Solidly set on a corner above the Mercat Cross and below the
castle, this elegant Scottish-Austrian restaurant is a reliable and popular choice. The solid,
conservative decor is weirdly offset by magazine-style skiing photos, but the food doesn't
miss a beat and ranges from Scottish favourites to gourmet schnitzel and spaetzle noodles.
Vegetarian options are good, and quality Austrian wines provide an out-of-the-ordinary
accompaniment.

( www.eastindiastirling.co.uk ; 7 Viewfield Pl; mains £7-10; 5-11pm) This basement In-
dian restaurant is sumptuously decorated to resemble a ship's stateroom, with portraits of
tea barons on the wall to conjure images of the days of the clippers. It offers dishes from
all parts of India and you can BYO wine.

Mamma Mia££

( www.mammamiastirling.co.uk ; 52 Spittal St; mains £12-17; 5-10.30pm Mon-Sat) This
Old Town split-level favourite has a short menu of southern Italian cuisine augmented by
weekly specials, which are definitely worth going for. It shows a sure touch with sea bass
and Scottish steaks alike, though it's hard not to feel the pasta dishes are a mite over-
priced.

Darnley Coffee House£

( 01786 474468; www.darnley.connectfree.co.uk ; 18 Bow St; snacks £4-7; breakfast
& lunch) Just down the hill from the castle, beyond the end of Broad St, this is a good pit
stop for home baking and speciality coffees during a walk around the Old Town. The cafe
is in the vaulted cellars of a 16th-century house where Darnley, lover and later husband of
Mary, Queen of Scots, once stayed while visiting her.
