ible, so will happily do deals for singles and groups. The two rooms looking over the
garden are absolutely fabulous on a sunny day.
HOTEL
Culcreuch Castle££
( 01360-860555; www.culcreuch.com ; Fintry; s/d from £83/116; ) Fancy a
night in a 700-year-old castle? Parts of Culcreuch date to 1296 and the whole is a remark-
ably well-preserved historic building. The rooms vary substantially in size, price and com-
fort, and most look out onto the collage of greenery engulfing the surrounding estate. A
little dowdy perhaps and popular with groups, but this place, with its period furnishings,
has real character. There are also self-catering lodges a little removed from the castle it-
self, great for families; one is pet-friendly.
INN
The Inn at Kippen££
( 01786-870500; www.theinnatkippen.co.uk ; Fore Rd, Kippen; mains £11-17; meals
noon-9pm; ) Though it doesn't promise a great deal from outside, this atmospher-
ic and historic pub is one of the best places in the region to eat, and offers exceptional
value for this quality of food. Elaborate, imaginative dishes are solidly grounded in British
tradition with the odd exotic influence; everything is reliably delicious. There are also
three gorgeous rooms (doubles from £85) available. Kippen is just off the A811 between
Balfron and Stirling.
Clachan Inn£
( www.clachaninndrymen.co.uk ; The Square, Drymen; mains £9-10) One of several pubs
in Scotland claiming the oldest inn title (opened 1734), this isn't as atmospheric as it
could be - who thought a fruit machine was a good idea in an historic hostelry? Neverthe-
less, it serves a reliable menu of bar meals. Order the local malt, Glengoyne, for dessert.
PUB
Getting There & Away
First bus 10 runs from Glasgow to Killearn regularly. There are frequent daily services
(except Sunday) between Balfron and Drymen on First bus 8.
