MACKINTOSH BUILDING

Sat, noon-5pm Sun) Mackintosh's first building, designed in 1893, was a striking new
headquarters for the Glasgow Herald . Tucked up a narrow lane off Buchanan St, it now
serves as Scotland's Centre for Architecture & Design, with fairly technical temporary ex-
hibitions (sometimes admission is payable for these), as well as the Mackintosh Interpret-
ation Centre, a detailed (if slightly dry) overview of his life and work. On the top floor of
the 'lighthouse', drink in great views over the rooftops and spires of the city centre.
City Chambers

( www.glasgow.gov.uk ; George Sq) The grand City Chambers, the seat of local govern-
ment, were built in the 1880s at the high point of the city's wealth. The interior is even
more extravagant than the exterior, and the chambers have sometimes been used as a
movie location to represent the Kremlin or the Vatican. Free guided tours are held at
10.30am and 2.30pm Monday to Friday.

time-capsule experience, visit this small apartment in the Tenement House, operated by
the National Trust for Scotland. It offers a vivid insight into middle-class city life in the
late 19th century.

Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum

tory of the Royal Highland Fusiliers, as well as previous regiments, from 1678 to the
present. The walls are dripping with exhibits, including uniforms, medals, pictures and
other militaria. The wrought ironwork was designed by Mackintosh.
