In-Depth Information
Nightclubs
Edinburgh's club scene has some fine DJ talent and is well worth exploring; there are
club-night listings in the
List
. Most of the venues are concentrated in and around the twin
sumps of Cowgate and Calton Rd - so it's downhill all the way…
Bongo Club
(
www.thebongoclub.co.uk
;
Moray House, Paterson's Land, 37 Holyrood Rd)
The weird
and wonderful Bongo Club boasts a long history of hosting everything from wild club
nights to performance art to kids' comedy shows, and is open as a cafe and exhibition
space during the day. May shift to new premises in 2013 - check website for latest news.
ARTS VENUE
Cabaret Voltaire
(
www.thecabaretvoltaire.com
;
36 Blair St)
An atmospheric warren of stone-lined vaults
houses Edinburgh's most 'alternative' club, which eschews huge dance floors and egotist-
ical DJ worship in favour of a 'creative crucible' hosting an eclectic mix of DJs, live acts,
comedy, theatre, visual arts and the spoken word. Well worth a look.
CLUB, LIVE MUSIC
Studio 24
(
www.studio24.me
; 24 Calton Rd)
Studio 24 is the dark heart of Edinburgh's underground
music scene, with a program that covers all bases, from house to nu metal via punk, ska,
reggae, crossover, tribal, electro, techno and dance.
CLUB
Opal Lounge
(
www.opallounge.co.uk
;
51 George St)
The Opal Lounge is jammed at weekends with af-
fluent 20-somethings who've spent £200 and two hours in front of a mirror to achieve that
artlessly scruffy look. During the week, when the air-kissing crowds thin out, it's a good
place to relax with an expensive but expertly mixed cocktail. Expect to queue on weekend
evenings.
