lakes and jetties that are perfect for dangling a line. Some of our favourite fishing spots in-
clude North Stradbroke Island, Fraser Island, Rainbow Beach, Lake Tinaroo and Lake-
field National Park.
There are local fishing shops in most coastal towns where you can get advice on what's
biting where and get set up with a rig. Fishing charters are also big-business in Queens-
land: hook yourself onto a tour in places like North Stradbroke Island, Caloundra, Rain-
bow Beach, Port Douglas, Hamilton Island and Maroochydore. The heavy-tackle game-
fishing season runs from September to December.
Information & Resources
The Great Barrier Reef has traditionally been a popular fishing ground (so many fish!),
but zoning laws introduced in 2004 in response to concerns about environmental damage
and overfishing have tightened the area of reef that can be fished. There are also limita-
tions on the number of fish you can catch and their size, and restrictions on the type of
gear you can use. You also need to be aware of which fish are protected entirely from fish-
ing.
To find out what you can catch, where and how, contact the Department of National
Parks, Recreation, Sport & Racing (( www.nprsr.qld.gov.au ) ) or swing into a local fishing
shop. For information on weather and tide conditions and what's biting, tune in to local ra-
dio stations. For weekly reports on fishing spots along the coast see
www.fishingmonthly.com.au .
