Top Surf Spots
Agnes Water & Town of 1770 Pretty much the last place on the coast heading north where you can catch a wave (north
of here the Great Barrier Reef intercepts the ocean swells). The breaks here are strictly for old hands, though: the waves
can get fast and steep, you have to paddle well out from shore, and you may be sharing your personal space with the odd
reef shark.
Burleigh Heads The point break here is magnificent, peeling in from the national park on the headland to the main
beach - but it does require some experience.
Caloundra to Mooloolaba A very popular strip of sandy suburban shoreline with fine beach breaks.
Coolangatta An essential surf haunt for Gold Coasters, particularly Kirra Beach. The Superbank is here too - a 2km-
long sandbar stretching from Snapper Rocks to Kirra Point.
Noosa Popular with longboarders, with good wave action at Sunshine Beach and the point breaks around the national
park, especially during the cyclone swells of summer (December to February).
North Stradbroke Island Harder to get to, but has fabulous surf beaches that are always less crowded than the Gold
Coast and Sunshine Coast beaches.
