Wildlife Watching
Native wildlife is one of Queensland's (and indeed Australia's) top selling points. Nation-
al parks are your best bet for the greatest concentrations of species, although many native
critters are nocturnal (bring a torch). Queensland is also a bird-watching nirvana, with a
wide variety of habitats and species, particularly water birds.
As well as the national parks, wildlife hot spots include Cape Tribulation and the
Mareeba Wetlands for birds; Magnetic Island for koalas; Fraser Island for dingoes; Her-
vey Bay for whales; Mon Repos, near Bundaberg, for sea turtles; North Stradbroke Island
for dolphins, sea turtles and rays; and the Daintree for crocodiles and cassowaries. And, as
the precautionary road signs attest, the rainforest around Mission Beach is also home to
cassowaries.
