Bushwalking
Despite the heat and humidity, bushwalking happens in Queensland year-round, from short
1km ambles to multiday treks with camping along the way.
There are some celebrated, rugged tracks for experienced walkers in Queensland: one of
the most famous is the 32km ungraded Thorsborne Trail on Hinchinbrook Island in north-
ern Queensland. With limited walker numbers, the Thorsborne traverses a range of environ-
ments - including remote beaches, rainforests and creeks - amid spectacular mountain
scenery.
When to Walk
The accommodating climate in southeast Queensland makes hiking feasible year round.
But regardless of the season, you should always take plenty of drinking water with you: the
Queensland sun kicks like a mule.
North of the Capricorn Coast, the best time to hike is from April to September - things
can get pretty hot and sticky during the summer season (November to March). Longer
walking tracks are often closed over summer, and even shorter tracks require advance plan-
ning to take into account the harsher conditions. Summer is also the most dangerous period
for bushfires: the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport & Racing
(( www.nprsr.qld.gov.au ) in Queensland can advise on current alerts.
GREAT WALKS OF QUEENSLAND
The 'Great Walks of Queensland' project is a $16.5 million undertaking to create a world-class set of 10 multiday walking
tracks. For complete track descriptions, maps and campsite bookings, visit www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/experiences/great-
walks .
