Tram
By the time you read this, the shiny new Gold Coast Rapid Transit ( www.goldlinq.com.au ) tram system might be op-
erational, linking 16 stops over 13km between Southport and Broadbeach. Until then, local buses are your best bet.
Tours
Several backpacker and tour bus companies operate along the Queensland coast. These trips are economically priced
and can be more fun than conventional tour buses: the buses are usually smaller and you'll meet other travellers.
AAT Kings ( 1300 556 100; www.aatkings.com ) Big coach company (popular with the older set) with myriad tours
all around Australia.
Adventure Tours Australia (
1800 068 886; www.adventuretours.com.au ) Affordable, young-at-heart tours in all
states.

Australia.
Train
Queensland has a sizeable rail network that services the coast between Brisbane and Cairns, with several routes heading
inland to Mt Isa, Longreach and Charleville. There are nine main service routes, including the Kuranda Scenic Railway,
which is primarily a tourist route in northern Queensland. All services are operated by Queensland Rail (
1800 872
467; www.queenslandrail.com.au ).
Additionally, NSW TrainLink ( 13 22 32; www.nswtrainlink.info ) has a daily XPT (express passenger train) ser-
vice between Brisbane and Sydney (economy seat/1st-class seat $95/130, 15 hours).
Classes & Costs
Travelling by rail within Queensland is generally slower and more expensive than bus travel, although some economy
fares are comparable. Where sleeping berths are available they cost from around $70 extra per night in economy (cheap-
er for triple-bunk cabins than singles or twins), and approximately $230 more for 1st class. The Sunlander from Bris-
bane to Cairns also has 'Queenslander Class', which includes comfortable berths, meals in the restaurant car and histor-
ical commentary en route.
