Having a 4WD enables you to get away from the touristy routes and out to some of the natural wonders and wilderness
areas that most travellers don't see. Something middle-sized like a Nissan X-Trail costs around $100 to $150 per day;
for a Toyota Land Cruiser you're looking at around $150 up to $200, which should include unlimited kilometres. Check
insurance conditions carefully, especially the excess, as they can be onerous (in Queensland $4000 excess is typical, al-
though this can often be reduced to around $1000 on payment of an additional daily charge of around $30).

Once the preserve of meandering grey nomads, campervanning has exploded in Australia in recent years, and nowhere
more so than in Queensland. The advantages are obvious: a weather-proof home on wheels, providing transport, accom-
modation, cooking gear (usually), and no mucking around with tents. Most towns have at least one caravan park where
you can park and plug into power. National parks usually have self-registration or pre-booked campsites.
Campervan hire rates are from around $90 (two-berth) or $150 (four-berth) per day, usually with minimum five-day
hire and unlimited kilometres.
