In-Depth Information
The Pacific Hwy is the main access point into Queensland from the south, crossing the New South Wales (NSW) bor-
der at Tweed Heads. A lesser-used route from the south is the New England Hwy, crossing the border at Tenterfield. The
Newell Hwy is the most direct route to Brisbane from Melbourne or Adelaide.
The other major route into southern Queensland is the Mitchell Hwy. It crosses the border at Barringun and links
Bourke in outback NSW with Charleville in outback Queensland.
The main road from the west is the Barkly Hwy, which crosses the Northern Territory-Queensland border around
15km west of Camooweal and cuts across to Mt Isa.
Sea
It is possible (if not straightforward) to travel between Queensland and Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, New Zealand and
the Pacific islands by hitching rides or crewing on yachts − usually you have to at least contribute towards food. Ask
around at marinas and sailing clubs in places like Great Keppel Island, Airlie Beach, the Whitsundays and Cairns.
Alternatively, P&O Cruises ( www.pocruises.com.au ) operates holiday cruises between Brisbane and destinations in
New Zealand and the Pacific. Even more alternatively, some freighter ships allow passengers to travel on-board as they
ship cargo to/from Australia: see websites such as www.freighterexpeditions.com.au and www.freightercruises.com for
options.
