In-Depth Information
Another Queensland success story is The Veronicas, made up of twins of Sicilian des-
cent whose pop style is a hit with teenagers. More interesting is Kate Miller-Heidke, a
classically trained singer, who channels the likes of Björk, Kate Bush and Cyndi Lauper in
her works. Chase down a copy of Little Eve (2007) , Curiouser (2008) or Night Flight
(2012). The Last Day on Earth, from Curiouser, was a top-10 single.
Flying the flag for Far North Queensland, the McMenamins are a talented brother-and-
sister folk duo who are receiving increasing airplay and have performed around the coun-
try. Their self-titled debut (released in 2003), as well as In this Light (2006), Long Time
Gone (2010) and Sand and Stone (2013) are all worth a spin.
DAVID MALOUF
Lebanese-Australian author and poet David Malouf (b 1934 in Brisbane) is one of Queensland's most interna-
tionally recognised writers, having been nominated for the Booker Prize in 1993 and winning the Neustadt Inter-
national Prize for Literature in 2000. Among other titles, he is well known for his evocative tales of an Australian
boyhood in Brisbane - Johnno (1975); as well as his memoir 12 Edmondstone Street (1985); and for The Great
World (1990), his Australian epic that spans two world wars. Set on the Gold Coast, his 1982 novel Fly Away
Peter tells the poignant story of a returned soldier struggling to come to terms with ordinary life and the unjust
nature of social hierarchy. His collection of short stories Every Move You Make (2006) dissects Australian life
across the continent, including Far North Queensland. His most recent novel is Ransom (2009), an ambitious re-
count of books 16 to 24 of Homer's epic Iliad .
