minister. Menzies had an avuncular charm, but he was also a vigilant opponent of com-
munism. As the Cold War intensified, Australia and New Zealand entered a formal milit-
ary alliance with the USA - the 1951 Anzus security pact. It followed that when the USA
became involved in a civil war in Vietnam more than a decade later, Menzies committed
Australian forces to the conflict. In 1966 Menzies retired, leaving his successors a bitter
legacy: an antiwar movement that divided Australia.
