History by Dr Michael Cathcart & Regis St
Louis
Human settlement in Queensland dates back 60,000 years, though historians know
little of its inhabitants prior to Captain Cook's arrival in 1770. Since then, the state
has been shaped by pastoral expansion, gold rushes, workers strikes, wars, depres-
sion, mining booms, a rise in nationalism and, most recently, a growing global outlook
and landmark legal recognition of Australia's first peoples.
Dr Michael Cathcart presents history programs on ABC TV, is a broadcaster on ABC Radio National and
teaches history at the Australian Centre, University of Melbourne.
