Lizard Island
The five islands of the Lizard Island Group cluster just 33km off the coast about 100km
north from Cooktown. The continental main island, Lizard Island, has a dry, rocky, moun-
tainous terrain and spectacular fringing reef for snorkelling and diving. Most of the island
is national park, with plenty of wildlife - including 11 different species of lizard - and 24
glistening white beaches.
Accommodation is either five-star luxury at ultra -exclusive Lizard Island Resort ( 1300
863 248; www.lizardisland.com.au ; Anchor Bay; d from $1520; ) , or bush camping at the is-
land's camping ground ( 13 74 68; www.nprsr.qld.gov.au ; per person $5.45) . Bring all supplies as there
are no shops on the island.
Flying is the easiest way to reach Lizard Island; book all air transfers to/from Cairns
(return $650, $590 for resort guests) through the resort. Flight time is one hour.
