Getting There & Away
The 70km coast-hugging drive between Cairns and Port Douglas is one of the loveliest in
the whole country. For those sans-wheels, there are many bus options, including the fol-
lowing:
Coral Reef Coaches ( 07-4098 2800; www.coralreefcoaches.com.au ) connects Port Douglas with
Cairns ($40, 1¼ hours) via Cairns airport and Palm Cove.
Sun Palm ( Click here ) has frequent daily services between Port Douglas and Cairns
($40, 1½ hours) via the northern beaches and the airport.
Country Road Coachlines ( 07-4045 2794; www.countryroadcoachlines.com.au ) has a bus service
between Port Douglas and Cooktown on the coastal route via Cape Tribulation three times
a week ($70), weather permitting.
Getting Around
Port Douglas Bike Hire ( 07-4099 5799; www.portdouglasbikehire.com.au ; cnr Wharf & Warner Sts; per day from
$19) Has high-performance bikes for hire as well as tandems ($32 per day). Free delivery
and pick-up.
Sun Palm ( 07-4087 2900; www.sunpalmtransport.com.au ) Runs in a continuous loop every half-
hour (7am to midnight) between Wildlife Habitat and Marina Mirage.
For vehicle hire, the major international rental chains are represented here, or try a local
company like Paradise Wheels ( 07-4099 6625; www.paradisewheels.com.au ) or Port Douglas Car Hire (
07-4099 4999; www.portdouglascarhire.com ) . Many places don't let you take cars off-road: check
before hiring. It's the last place before Cooktown where you can hire a 4WD.
