Malanda & Around
POP 2053
Round these parts, 'Malanda' has been a byword for 'milk' ever since 560 cattle made the
16-month overland journey from New South Wales in 1908. There's still a working dairy
here, and the town is surrounded by rainforest. Locals cool off in the shady, croc-free
Malanda Falls .
Guided rainforest walks (per person $16; 9.30am, 11.30am Sat & Sun; bookings essential) , led by mem-
bers of the Ngadjonji community, can be organised through Malanda's visitor centre (
07-4096 6957; www.malandafalls.com ; Malanda-Atherton Rd, across from Malanda Falls; 9.30am-4.30pm daily) .
Or head on up to the Malanda Dairy Centre ( 07-4095 1234; www.malandadairycentre.com ; 8 James St;
tours adult/child $10.50/6.50; tours at noon Thu-Tue, call to confirm) for 40-minute factory tours,
which include a cheese platter or a milkshake. If you're not yet languishing in a lacto-
haze, its licenced cafe (mains from $15; ) has great grub.
About 10km from Malanda, tiny Tarzali has accommodation options including the
wonderful Canopy (
07-4096 5364; www.canopytreehouses.com.au ; Hogan Rd, Tarzali, via Malanda; d
$229-379; ) , with timber polehouses tucked into a patch of old-growth rainforest and
loads of inquisitive wildlife to watch. Two-night minimum stay.
