Wildlife Sanctuaries & Zoos
Kuranda's rainforest twitters, growls and snaps with all manner of creatures, and the town
itself is home to a handful of zoos and sanctuaries. The visitor centre has a full list; try
these ones for starters.
If you can wake 'em from their gum-leaf coma, you can cuddle a koala (there are wom-
bats and wallabies too) at the Koala Gardens ( 07-4093 9953; www.koalagardens.com ; Heritage Markets,
Rob Veivers Dr; adult/child $17/8.50, koala photos extra; 9.45am-4pm daily) . The Australian Butterfly Sanctu-
ary ( 07-4093 7575; www.australianbutterflies.com ; 8 Rob Veivers Dr; adult/child/family $19/9.50/47.50;
9.45am-4pm daily) is Australia's largest butterfly aviary: you can see butterflies being bred in
the lab on a half-hour tour. Birdworld ( 07-4093 9188; www.birdworldkuranda.com ; Heritage Markets,
Rob Veivers Dr; adult/child $17/8.50; 9am-4pm) is home to 80 species of free-flying native and
exotic birds. Combination tickets for all three cost $46/23 per adult/child.
Kuranda Riverboat
( 07-4093 7476; www.kurandariverboat.com ; adult/child/family $15/7/37; hourly 10.45am-2.30pm) Hop
aboard for a 45-minute calm-water cruise along the Barron River. Located behind the train
station; buy tickets on board.

Kuranda Rainforest Park

with grassy camping sites enveloped in rainforest. The basic but cosy 'backpacker rooms'
open onto a tin-roofed timber deck, cabins come with poolside or garden views, and
there's a restaurant serving local produce on site. It's a 10-minute walk from town via a
forest trail.
