Castaways' cheapest rooms don't have balconies, so it's worth splashing out a bit more
for one of the 'Coral Sea' rooms with an extended deck and day bed. The units are small,
beach views from its tropical-style
bar/restaurant
(mains $12-32;
breakfast, lunch & dinner)
. Come
on Tuesdays for tropical high tea.

Run by globetrotting brothers Robert and Jade, this timber pole-frame retreat high in
the rainforest has it all, and then some. Jungly surrounds, a sparkling pool, airy rooms and
the breezy terrace tempt you to linger longer; the outdoor cinema and free surfboard hire
cement the deal.

Reached by a steep 600m-long rainforest walking track
from the car park (4WD pick-up available), you can sleep surrounded only by flyscreen
on a platform in simple huts, or opt for en suite cabins whose showers have floor-to-ceil-
ing rainforest views. Tramp the walking tracks, take a yoga class ($15), indulge in a mas-
sage (per hour $80), and cook in the self-catering kitchen or dine on wholesome fare at the
restaurant
(mains $19-33; 7.30am-8.30pm; )
. Eco-initiatives include its own sewerage sys-
tem, rainwater harvesting and biodegradable detergents. Not suitable for kids under 11.
