They like their markets in Mackay, with a surprisingly varied bunch of bazaars selling
everything from bric-a-brac to one-off duds to organic fruit. Try the Mackay Showgrounds
Markets (Saturdays from 7.30am, Milton St), Twilight Markets (first Friday of the month from
5pm to 9pm, Mackay Surf Club) and the Troppo Market (second Sunday of the month from
7.30am, Mt Pleasant Shopping Centre carpark).

Information
The train station, airport, botanic gardens and visitor centre are about 3km south of the
city centre. Mackay Harbour, 6km northeast of the centre, is dominated by a massive sug-
ar terminal, while the adjacent marina has a smattering of waterfront restaurants.

Getting There & Away
AIR
The airport is about 3km south of the centre of Mackay.

BUS
Buses stop at the Mackay Bus Terminal (cnr Victoria & Macalister Sts) , where tickets can also be
booked. Greyhound ( 1300 473 946; www.greyhound.com.au ) travels up and down the coast.
Sample one-way adult fares and journey times: Airlie Beach ($30, two hours), Townsville
($67, 6 hours), Cairns ($113, 13 hours) and Brisbane ($213, 17 hours).
