TURTLE TOTS
Mon Repos , 15km northeast of Bundaberg, is one of Australia's most accessible turtle rookeries. From Novem-
ber to late March, female loggerheads lumber laboriously up the beach to lay eggs in the sand. About eight weeks
later, the hatchlings dig their way to the surface, and under cover of darkness emerge en masse to scurry as
quickly as their little flippers allow down to the water.
The Mon Repos visitor centre ( 07-4153 8888; 271 Bourbong St) has information on turtle conservation
and organises nightly tours (adult/child $10.55/5.55) from 7pm during the season. Bookings are mandatory and
can be made through the Bundaberg Visitor Centre ( Click here ) or online at www.bookbundabergregion.com.au .
