GOLD, WOOD, STEAM & SONG: GYMPIE & THE MARY VALLEY
Gympie's gold once saved Queensland from near-bankruptcy, but that was in the 1860s and not much has
happened here since. History buffs will find a large collection of mining equipment and functioning steam-driven
engines at the Gympie Gold Mining & Historical Museum ( www.gympiegoldmuseum.com.au ; 215 Brisbane
Rd; adult/child/family $10/5/25; 9am-3pm). There's also the Woodworks Forestry & Timber Museum
( www.woodworksmuseum.com.au ; cnr Fraser Rd & Bruce Hwy; admission $5; 10am-4pm Mon-Sat) on the
Bruce Hwy south of town. The highlight of the museum (and perhaps the lowlight of the logging industry) is a
cross-section of a magnificent kauri pine that lived through the Middle Ages, Columbus' discovery of America
and the Industrial Revolution, only to be felled in the early 20th century.
After the summer rains, the Mary Valley around here is lush and scenic. If you don't have a car, explore the
valley on a 1923 steam train, the Valley Rattler (
07-5482 2750; www.thevalleyrattler.com ) . Schedules and
prices are ever-changing; see website for updates.
Amamoor is the site of the annual Gympie Music Muster ( www.muster.com.au ) , a six-day country-music
hoedown held annually in August.
Gympie Cooloola Tourism ( www.cooloola.org.au ; Lake Alford, Bruce Hwy, Gympie;
9am-4.30pm) has a
wealth of information on sights and activities along the entire Fraser Coast.
Greyhound ( Click here ) and Premier ( 13 34 10; www.premierms.com.au ) have numerous daily services to
Gympie from Brisbane, Noosa, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay. Traveltrain ( 1800 872 467;
www.traveltrain.com.au ) operates the Tilt Train and the Sunlander from Brisbane to Gympie on their way to
Rockhampton and Cairns.
