15 This ecofriendly resort island ( Click here ) is one of the loveliest and most underrated
places to experience the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkel straight off the beach: the reef sur-
rounding the tiny coral cay is teeming with tropical fish, turtles and resident manta rays. At
hatching time (January to April) you can see baby turtles scamper across the sand, while
humpback whales cruise past between June and October. Getting to the island is equally
memorable, with a scenic flight over the turquoise reef-filled waters.
