Busy but strangely unhurried,
MBD is a brilliant sidestreet deli-cafe. Ceiling-high shelves overflow with produce - vats
of oil, Mediterranean sea salt, olives and pasta - and the counter is packed with gourmet
pies, quiches, tarts, imported cheeses, antipasti and cakes. Park yourself at the long central
table and sip a 'Flu Fighter' juice (orange, carrot, ginger and parsley).

This hip corner cafe is 100m from Mermaid Beach, a quick jaunt south of
Broadbeach. The brainchild of four buddies who obsess over service and organic ingredi-
ents, it's a mod-industrial affair with chunky timber tables, super staff and adventurous
mains: try the quesadilla with goats cheese and sesame, or the 18-hour sticky pork with
sour herb salad. Great coffee, too.

the best pad thai on the coast, Beer Thai Garden is right on the busy road but brims with
atmosphere. Two affable elephants flank the entrance, and soft lighting brings an almost
romantic vibe to the garden bar. Easy on the pocket, too.

This cruisy cafe/bar is the pick of the eateries on Surf Pde.
Fast-moving, black-clad wait staff shuffle out plates of risotto, pasta, gourmet pizza,

duction).
