THE BARRACKS
Across a footbridge from Roma St Station or a short walk from Caxton St in Petrie Terrace, the Barracks MAP
GOOGLE MAP ( www.thebarracks.info ; 61 Petrie Tce, Petrie Terrace) once served as a gaol (1860 to 1883), then
a police depot (until the 1940s), and sat derelict for decades before reopening as a mixed-use development in
2008, following a $120 million overhaul. Comprising three big heritage-listed buildings from its former days, the
development was hailed an immediate success (and garnered national awards) in the realm of urban renewal, and

The Barracks houses shops, cafes, bars, restaurants (both casual and high-end), the six-screen Palace Barracks

speciality stores. The pick of the bars is moody Cabiria ( Click here ), a New York-style cocktail bar. Perfect for a
rainy afternoon!

creative, good-value options can still be found.
