back from hectic Ann St in an 1865 servants' home (Brisbane's third-oldest building!),

Another of Brisbane's
new breed of hip laneway coffee shops, Bean is down a grungy, graffiti-spangled drive-
way off George St, surrounded by fire escapes, air-con-units and construction cranes. You
can grab a biscuit or a basic eggy breakfast here, but coffee is the main game. Live music
Thursdays at 5pm.

Merlo Coffee
( 07-3221 2616;

;
10 Market St; items $4-8; 6.30am-4pm Mon-Fri)
Keeping the
downtown business bods firing, this roaster/cafe is one of several Merlos around Brisbane
(a local success story). The food is fine (croissants, cakes, sandwiches), but what you're
here for is the coffee: strong enough to get you through the next meeting.
