have a grim appeal: it's part morbidly fascinating 'dark tourism'; part architectural herit-
age appreciation; part 'Look how far we've come' social commentary; and part just plain
spooky. This version takes you through the notorious Boggo Road Gaol a couple of kilo-
metres south of the city centre, which was a working prison from 1883 to 2002.

dates from 1846 and is beautifully fitted out with Victorian furnishings, antiques, clothing
and period displays. It's a modest, peach- coloured L-shaped affair, surrounded by mani-
cured lawns with lovely river views. Wedding photographers do their best to avoid the big
brick electrical substation in the gardens. Free Sunday afternoon concerts.
Alma Park Zoo

Bond with a multicultural mix of furred and feathered brethren at Queensland's oldest
zoo, 28km north of the city. Inhabiting 16 hectares of subtropical gardens is a large brood
of native birds and mammals, including koalas, kangaroos, emus and dingoes (plus some
international interlopers). You can touch many of the animals; feeding times are all
between 10.30am and 3pm.
To get here via public transport take the Caboolture line from Roma St Station ($7.50,
45 minutes). The zoo is a 1.8km walk from the station.

Daisy Hill Koala Centre

Hill; 10am-4pm) About 25km southeast of the city, Daisy Hill offers informative
displays and a number of fat and happy-looking koalas - but it's no zoo. The surrounding
area is an important koala habitat and part of a 435-hectare conservation park. The centre
is designed to acquaint visitors with koalas on a much more comprehensive level than just
