Sights
Most of Brisbane's major sights are in the CBD or inner-city suburbs. A walk through the
city centre will reveal Brisbane's colonial history and architecture, while a ferry ride or
bridge walk across the river lands you in South Bank, home to both stellar art museums
and peaceful parklands (complete with artificial swimming lagoon).

( 07-3403 8463; www.brisbane.qld.gov.au ; King George Sq; 10am-5pm) Overlooking King
George Sq, this fine 1930s sandstone edifice is fronted by a row of sequoia-sized Cor-
inthian columns and has an 85m-high clocktower with a fabulous lookout, from which
bells peal across the city rooftops. In 2013 the hall opened up again after three-year renov-
ation. Free guided tours run hourly from 10.30am to 3.30pm; free clocktower tours run
every 15 minutes from 10.45am to 4.45pm. The excellent Museum of Brisbane ( Click
here ) is also located here.
The results of the renovations are spectacular, with the building's best features - ceil-
ings, lavishly tiled lobbies and art-deco light fittings - all brought to the fore. The domed
auditorium itself is truly magnificent - a cavernous volume (Australia's version of the Ha-
gia Sophia?) with a 4300-pipe organ, 1644 seats and mahogany-and-bluegum floors. The
Rolling Stones played their first-ever Australian gig here in 1965. Phone for guided tour
bookings; clocktower tours are on a first-come, first-served basis.
