In-Depth Information
3. STAR-2 inference combining question with answer content (10.4.10).
4. STAR-2 inference interpreting
moi/toi
in quoted speech (11.2.3).
5. STAR-2 inference interpreting
ça
coreferentially (11.3.6)
The STAR-1 inferences derive a modified version of a STAR-0 content which
is stored at the
now front
of the speaker's Word Bank and used for language
production. The STAR-2.1-STAR-2.4 inferences change a STAR-1 content
prior to storage at the
now front
of the hearer's Word Bank. The STAR-2.5 in-
ference 11.2.3 does not derive new content, but applies to stored content with-
out permanently changing it - as if it were looking through a pair of glasses.
The inferences listed in 11.2.4 and 11.2.5 all use the same format, consisting
of an input schema, a connective, an output schema, and variable restrictions. It
is a matter of further research to design more inferences as needed, to combine
them to obtain generalizations where possible, and to classify them into more
and more differentiated groups and subgroups. According to the Sequential
Inferencing Principle (SIP, 5.2.5), two inferences x and y may be applied in
sequence iff the consequent of x equals the antecedent of y.
11.3 Indexical vs. Coreferential Uses of
3rd
Pronouns
In texts containing direct speech,
moi
and
toi
refer to language proplets - in-
stead of pointing to the values of the STAR's A and R attributes, as in dialogue.
Such reference to activated language items, based on the inference 11.2.3, pro-
vides us with a model for the interpretation of third person indexicals.
The pointer
ça
may refer not only indexically to the value of the STAR's
3rd
attribute (e.g., 10.1.6), but also coreferentially to activated language items,
assuming grammatical and semantic compatibility. Consider the following ex-
ample of an object sentence construction:
11.3.1 A
MBIGUOUS HEAR MODE CONTENT
Mary
knew that
she
was happy.
STAR
−
2
On the indexical reading,
she
refers to a female other than Mary, e.g., Suzy;
this may be shown graphically as follows:
11.3.2 I
NDEXICAL USE OF
she
she
Mary
knew that
was happy.
