One thing all backyard farmers know, whether operating on a large or small scale, is that informa-
tion is power. In this appendix, I've recommended several of my favorite books and websites,
organized by section, so you can find more detailed information on some of the concepts in this
book. A more extensive listing of resources and full reviews of materials can also be found at
BackyardFarmingGuide.com.
Part 1: Living Large on a Small Scale
Food, Inc. takepart.com/foodinc. This movie is chock-full of statistics, quotes, and behind-the-
scenes glimpses of what the current, industrialized food production looks like in America today.
Once you've watched this movie (I saw it through Netflix) you will understand the importance of
eating locally and knowing where your food is being produced.
Seymour, John. The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It: The Complete Back-to-Basics Guides .
New York, NY: DK Publishing, 2009. A good general overview of homestead living, I love
Seymour's philosophy of self-sufficiency in the first chapters.
Usser y, Ha r vey. The Small-Scale Poultry Flock. White River Junction, VT: Chelsea Green
Publishing, 2011. The first section of this topic shares the current system that is so common and
how this system is sick and unsustainable.
Part 2: Gardening on a Backyard Farm
Ashworth, Suzanne. Seed to Seed: Seed Saving and Growing Techniques for Vegetable Gardeners .
Decorah, IA: Seed Savers Exchange, 2002. The most complete manual on seed saving that I've
seen yet with details about distances needed between varieties, and how to save seeds from more
obscure plants.
