Backyard Farm
Here are three simple plans for your backyard farm. The cold frame will be useful for year-round
gardening, the chicken brooder can be used to hatch your own chicks or brood mail-order chicks,
and the goat pen is a versatile open shelter with myriad adaption possibilities.
Cold Frame
Start seeds outdoors earlier in the spring, and keep your plants growing longer in the fall with a
simple cold frame. This plan uses recycled windows from a home remodel to cut material costs.
Recycling throwaways like this will save you money in your gardening efforts. Our window was
35 1 2 ×27 1 2 ", but your window might be different. Older homes are notorious for having odd-sized
windows.
Supplies:
1 wood-framed window
1 8' 1×10 board
1 8' 1×12 board
2 medium hinges
Small box of 1" screws or nails
Screen door or small handle
1 2' 2×4 board
Steps:
1. Cut two lengths of 1×10 28" long and one length 34" long. Cut one length of 1×12 to 35 1 2 "
long (this is the front).
