Did you know that 99 percent of all the breeding turkey stock is held by three main companies? Did you
also know that these commercial strains are almost entirely incapable of breeding on their own?
One of the biggest problems you'll face starting out with new baby poults (young turkeys) will be
“starving out.” In some strains the natural foraging and feeding skills are so lost, the poults will
stand beside a full container of feed and starve to death. One way to handle this is to put week-old
chicks in with your new day-old poults so the older chicks can literally teach the turkeys how to eat
and get them started. Remove the chicks before their turkey roommates grow too large and start
bullying them around.
