Rock Climbing
When it comes to organised rock climbing, Thailand has the most on offer, but the region is
liberally peppered with karsts and climbing in Laos and Vietnam has really taken off. In Vi-
etnam, the pioneers and acknowledged specialists are Asia Outdoors ( Click here ) , a highly
professional outfit based on Cat Ba that offers instruction for beginners and dedicated trips
for rock hounds. In Dalat ( Click here ) there are a couple of good adventure tour operators
offering climbing and canyoning too.
In Laos, Vang Vieng ( Click here ) has some of the best climbing in Southeast Asia with
200 routes - many of them bolted - up the limestone cliffs, along with excellent instructors
and safe equipment. Most routes are rated between 4a and 8b. Adam's Rock Climbing
School ( Click here ) is the only dedicated climbing outfit in town, with experienced guides
and sturdy kit. Nong Khiaw has attracted the adventure specialist Green Discovery ( Click
here ) , with climbs up the limestone karsts under close and experienced instruction.
Climbing costs in the region start from about US$25 to US$30 and rise for more special-
ised climbs in the Halong Bay area or for instruction.
