Chiang Rai International Airport ( 0 5379 8000) , also known as Mae Fah Luang, is approx-
imately 8km north of the city. Air Asia ( 0 5379 3543, nationwide 0 2515 9999; www.airasia.com ;
8am-9pm) and Nok Air ( 0 5379 3000, nationwide 1318; www.nokair.co.th ; 8am-7pm) fly to
Bangkok's Don Muang International Airport, while Thai Airways International (THAI; 0
5379 8202, nationwide 0 2356 1111; www.thaiair.com ; 8am-8pm) flies to Bangkok's Suvarnab-
humi International Airport. Taxis run into town from the airport for 200B. From town, a
metred trip with Chiang Rai Taxi will cost around 120B.
Passenger boats ply Mae Nam Kok between Chiang Rai and Tha Ton, in Chiang Mai,
departing from CR Pier ( 0 5375 0009; 6am-4.30pm) , 2km northwest of town, via Th
Kraisorasit; a tu ́ k-tu ́ k to the pier should cost about 60B.
Buses bound for destinations within Chiang Rai Province, as well as a couple of
minivans and mostly slow fan-cooled buses bound for a handful of destinations in north-
ern Thailand, depart from the Provincial Bus Station (Th Prasopsook) in the centre of town. If
you're heading beyond Chiang Rai (or are in a hurry), you'll have to go to the new bus sta-
tion ( 0 5377 3989) , 5km south of town on Rte 1 (Asia 1 Hwy); frequent so ̆ rngta ̆ aou link-
ing it and the Inter-Provincial Bus Station run from 6am to 6.30pm (15B, 15 minutes).
