In-Depth Information
(admission 100B, plus per bicycle/motorcycle/car 10/30/50B; 6.30am-7pm Sun-Fri, to 9pm Sat) This
is the historical park's main zone and is home to what are arguably some of the park's
most well-preserved and impressive ruins. Near the entrance, Ramkhamhaeng National Mu-
seum (admission 150B; 9am-4pm) provides a modest collection of Sukhothai-era artefacts.
The crown jewel of the old city, Wat Mahathat MAP GOOGLE MAP , is one of the best ex-
amples of Sukhothai architecture, typified by the classic lotus-bud stupa that features a
conical spire topping a square-sided structure on a three-tiered base. Some of the orignal
Buddha images remain, including a 9m standing Buddha among the broken columns.
Wat Si Sawai , just south of Wat Mahathat, has three Khmer-style prang and a picturesque
moat. Wat Sa Si is a classically simple Sukhothai-style temple set on an island. Wat Trapang
Thong , next to the museum, is reached by the footbridge crossing the large, lotus-filled
pond that surrounds it.
Northern Zone
(admission 100B, plus per bicycle/motorcycle/car 10/30/50B;
7.30am-5.30pm) This zone, 500m
north of the old city walls, is easily reached by bicycle.
In the northwestern corner, Wat Si Chum contains a massive seated Buddha tightly
squeezed into an open, walled mon·dòp (the small square-sided building with a spire in a
wát). Somewhat isolated to the north of the city, Wat Phra Pai Luang is similar in style to
Wat Si Sawai , but the Ъrahng (tower) are larger.
Western Zone
(admission 100B, plus per bicycle/motorcycle/car 10/30/50B; 8am-4.30pm) The western zone is
the most expansive. Wat Saphan Hin is on a hill 3km west of the old city walls, and features
a 12.5m-high standing Buddha image looking back towards Sukhothai.
Elsewhere, the large, bell-shaped stupa at Wat Chang Lom , to the east, is supported by 36
elephants sculpted into its base.
