Diving & Snorkelling
Compared with destinations like Indonesia and the Philippines, diving and snorkelling op-
portunities in the Mekong region are limited. Southern Thailand (not covered in this topic)
has great diving for those heading south from Bangkok. Vietnam, and to a lesser extent
Cambodia, have growing dive industries.
The Con Dao Islands ( Click here ) offer unquestionably the best diving and snorkelling
in Vietnam, with bountiful marine life, fine reefs and even a wreck dive. Two professional
dive schools are based here, though it's much more costly than the rest of Vietnam. The
most popular place to dive in Vietnam is Nha Trang ( Click here ) , with plenty of reputable
dive operators, whose equipment and training is up to international standards. Phu Quoc
Island ( Click here ) has some beautiful coral gardens full of marine life, although visibility
can be a challenge. Hoi An's two dive schools head to the lovely Cham Islands ( Click
here ) , where the focus is on macro life.
In Cambodia, the best diving is on the islands off the south coast. Sihanoukville ( Click
here ) has several dive operators, but you're better off basing yourself on Koh Rong or Koh
Rong Samloem ( Click here ) to be closer to the action. Overnights on a boat are possible
further offshore near Koh Tang or Koh Prins ( Click here ) .

Responsible Diving
Please consider the following tips when diving and help preserve the ecology and beauty of
reefs:
ยป Avoid touching or standing on living marine organisms or dragging equipment across a reef. Polyps can be
damaged by even the gentlest contact. If you must hold on to a reef, only touch exposed rock or dead coral.
