River Road: Nong Khai to Loei
The River Rd (Th Kaew Worawut) west of Nong Khai is lined by flood-plain fields of to-
bacco, tomatoes and chillies and leads to a series of sleepy market towns and hamlets that
hardly make a blip on the national radar.
Mainly a day trip from Nong Khai, Tha Bo makes its money by using its noodle - the
production of noodles that is. A large Vietnamese population has cornered the rice-noodle
industry, a handmade process that occurs on the west side of town near the hospital. From
about 5am to 10am you can watch people at the factories making the noodles, and then
around 2pm they start the cutting. Afterwards the hairlike strands are set out to dry in the
sun.
A yellow bus runs regularly between Nong Khai's bus station and Tha Bo (27B, one
hour, every 30 minutes), taking the scenic riverside route.
At a scenic stretch of the Mekong where giant boulders rise out of the watery depths,
Wat Hin Mak Peng ( 6am-7pm) is hidden away in a cool bamboo grove. The monks
here have taken ascetic vows in addition to the standard 227 precepts, eating only once a
