In-Depth Information
Thailand
The northern Thai cities of Chiang Mai ( Click here ) and Chiang Rai ( Click here ) are
very popular for treks, often in combination with white-water rafting and elephant rides.
Pai ( Click here ) has also emerged as an alternative place to trek. Many of these treks are
run by ethical operators with sustainable trips to help disadvantaged minority peoples, but
there are a lot of cowboys out there. At up-and-coming Pha Taem National Park ( Click
here ) , the centrepiece is a long cliff with views over to Laos and a collection of prehistoric
rock paintings that are at least 3000 years old.
Vietnam
Vietnam's trekking mecca is Sapa ( Click here ) . The scenery is remarkable, with majestic
mountains, impossibly green rice paddies and some fascinating tribal villages. But the
main trails are incredibly popular and some villagers see hiking groups on an hourly basis.
Bac Ha ( Click here ) is at a lower elevation, less rainy and the trails here are not as heavily
tramped. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park ( Click here ) is just opening up to tourism.
Adventure tour operators in Hoi An ( Click here ) also offer some intriguing treks in the tri-
bal areas west of town.
