The four comfortable river-facing rooms here enjoy marble floors, balconies, Siberian
air-con and handsome furnishings. Ground-floor rooms have enormous windows close to
the road; we advise getting one upstairs. The river-deck restaurant has the best selection of
Western food on the island.
Villa Kang Khong
( 020 2240 3315; r 50,000-60,000K)
The most romantic budget digs in town, this stalwart
teak house creaks with uneven floors and nostalgic furnishings. Rooms are basic and fan-
cooled, and, with their colourful wood interiors, remind us vaguely of Roma gypsy cara-
vans.

Pon's original guesthouse
gets less TLC since he opened the swish Arena Hotel. The basic rooms, which come in
fan and air-con flavours, won't knock you over, but that's OK. The sprawling public bal-
cony in view of the river is the place to hang.

This Thai-
style modern hotel has upmarket rooms boasting hardwood floors, TVs, deep baths, milk-
white minimalism and a pleasant restaurant with a view of the river through its magnolia-
blossoming garden. The pricier rooms have balconies and river views.

This upscale hotel
on the river keeps expanding. The most recent addition is a 'Swiss chalet' that sits right on
the river and boasts airy rooms with neat wood trim and flat-screens. The 'Mekong view'
rooms sit further back and are nicer, while even the mountain-view rooms at the back
have granite-inlaid bathrooms, fish-bowl sinks and soft beds.
